It’s probably a measure of the problem, Mr. Gregg, that you could be writing from the right or from the left.

My second career was on campus, and while I did not see any problem in my last post, the one where I started showed me things I would not have tolerated when I was an undergraduate.

The administration designated a “free speech area” that would have been totally unreasonable even if I could find the part of the First Amendment that applies it only to designated areas….but I’ve never been able to discover that subtlety.

I was not a student though. As faculty, I felt and still feel that my role was not to drum up opposition to the rule but to support the students when they did.

I will confess that in my civil rights class I did mention it and say that students would not have tolerated it in my time. The feeling I got from the class — if not in words — was, “right, Bubba, that was then and this is now and nobody gives a shit so why should I be the first to raise my head high enough to get it lopped off?”
