It’s a love-hate relationship and the thing I hate the most is the black box.

Decisions are opaque.

I think the new system is going to help my income. I had been satisfied to grow the sum I was making each payday, if only by a little. That always worked out except in weeks when three or four days were consumed by medical appointments.

The theory of having lots of stories in the hopper so they continue to make money seems correct. I joined Medium for the reading when my most lucrative freelance gig dried up. The Newsweek editor got fired for investigating why a search warrant was run on the offices of Newsweek’s parent company. When they fired the editor, I quit.

It took months for me to see the result of my act of defiance and to realize my multiplying medical problems were not going to allow another gig with multiple deadlines. As the money dried up, I started cancelling subscriptions. When I came to Medium, I decided to see if I could earn five bucks a month by writing and keep the reading material I enjoyed.

My first Medium publication was around the Ides of March this year. Now, I have over 300, and the daily feedback — which is a great improvement that could be made better with a running total — starts with my highest payout of the day — for me…
